Agri-environment schemes do not support Brown Hare populations due to inadequate scheme application

چکیده
The goal of many agri-environment schemes (AES) is to increase biodiversity in agroecosystems. AES effects are often measured on invertebrates and birds; mammals as indicator species infrequently targets such researches. Our was evaluate the local-scale Hungarian Agri-Environmental Measures (AEM) European brown hare (Lepus europaeus), which shows decreasing population trends across Europe. We compared abundances their dropping numbers AEM control agricultural arable grassland fields 17 game management units two seasons. also examined quality based margin width vegetation cover. found that higher than fields. Control grasslands had grasslands. a significant difference counts between spring but no autumn. densities did not differ any season, treatment category or agroecosystem type. conclude program (2009-2014) Hungary effective for hare, this might have been caused by inadequate weak application practices. provide recommendations future programs enhance biodiversity.

متن کاملUniversity of Sussex the Effect of Agri-environment Schemes on Farmland Bee Populations
Over the past century there have been substantial declines in farmland biodiversity as a result of the intensification of agricultural practice. Concerns over these declines have led to the development of agri-environment schemes designed to mitigate the effects of intensive agriculture and to benefit biodiversity. Prior to commencing this thesis it was not clear if flower-rich, pollinator-focu...
متن کاملWidespread introgression of mountain hare genes into Fennoscandian brown hare populations
In Fennoscandia, mountain hare (Lepus timidus) and brown hare (Lepus europaeus) hybridize and produce fertile offspring, resulting in gene flow across the species barrier. Analyses of maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) show that introgression occur frequently, but unavailability of appropriate nuclear DNA markers has made it difficult to evaluate the scale- and significance for the ...
متن کاملLandscape context not patch size determines bumble-bee density on flower mixtures sown for agri-environment schemes.
Bumble-bee declines across Europe have been linked to loss of habitat and forage availability due to agricultural intensification. These declines may have severe ecological and commercial consequences since bumble-bees pollinate a range of wildflowers and crops. In England, attempts are being made to reintroduce forage resources through agri-environment schemes, yet there are few data on how th...
